About the event
MAIDEN & MOTHER - A RITE OF PASSAGE FOR GIRLS INTO WOMANHOOD (9-11 YEARS)
Although the idea of Rites of Passage may seem foreign to many, of long forgotten times based in mythology or even something out of story books, the practice is steeped in a history of ritual and reverence and very much alive and waiting to be re-awakened within each of us.
For thousands of years, traditional cultures (many still today) recognise the significant developmental changes in a girl’s life as the crucial time to offer the tools and wisdom needed for the healthy journey into womanhood. Long before neuro-science and medicine could explain the behavioural changes during adolescence, ancient cultures recognised the need to nurture the souls, spirits and hearts, to tenderly hold, and guide our girls through this precious time of transition. In the absence of ritualised and conscious Rites of Passage to welcome and acknowledge our girls, they are left to find themselves, and without the guidance of elders, these transitions fall short of offering the belonging and insight so essential in life transition, often resulting in emergencies rather than emergence.
This Mother and Daughter Gathering offers a Rite of Passage. A reminder. A remembering. The message to these young women are clear: You are not alone. You are a part of a great circle of women.
This carefully crafted Mother and Daughter Rite of Passage engages in gentle creative activities, stories, conversations, meditations relating to their unfolding experience into womanhood. Our focus is on creating a strong sense of mutual sharing and connection – a space to honour and pass-on the wisdoms of womanhood. This circle brings us back in connection with our own divine feminine essence, sensuality and soul. It is a deeply healing, safe, and nurturing space, consisting of embodied practices and a sacred container of sisters.
In this Rite of Passage, we will explore:
- Body wisdom - the natural rhythms and cycles of being a woman: menarche, menstruation, and frame the changes of puberty.
- Deepen the relationship to self and our motherlines
- Honour ritual and ceremony
- Connect with Mother Gaia
- Discover our animal guides
- Create an amulet of wisdom and protection*
*Throughout the course of the afternoon the girls will create and craft their very own amulet. This will include a crystal of their choosing, a hand-made, wise woman totem, and a letter from you, their mother. They will be able to add to this amulet over time and it will be a treasure from this Rite of Passage.
A NOTE FOR ATTENDING MOTHERS
Trust is what I keep coming back to when working with mothers as our daughters’ transition into womanhood.
Trust is to believe that our girls are whole right now; that there’s nothing to fix, nothing to change, and no part of them that is ‘too much’. To trust their ways of being in their bodies, their hearts, and minds, and tread mindfully.
Our job in this workshop is to meet them where they are at - and continue to do this over and over again as they transition into womanhood and beyond.
To hold this space as mothers is perhaps one of the greatest spiritual practices. Through our girls, we are compelled to turn the mirror on ourselves, and expand more of who we are. And it may be we must meet ourselves and the wounds that we experienced as we transitioned into our own womanhood.
Ask yourself: How did I learn about menarche? Puberty? Hormones? Did I feel supported? What feeling arise when I think about this time in my life? Shame? Guilt? Love?
This transition of our daughters calls for us to evolve as we face ourselves through their major life milestones. This is the gift they give us, to meet ourselves again. To hold our inner child in our hearts, and give HER the permission, care and support she didn’t receive, to be more of who she is, and unapologetically so.
To transition into puberty, or any other ‘big unknown’ for our girls means letting go of safety, of comfort, of habit, and leaping into a new beingness; surrendering into the what is, right now.
Making safe this next stage, means making the unknowns, more known to them. This is our job and the intent of this Rite of Passage.
